Chicago’s Tango Fest Promises World-Class Dancers, Plenty of Heat

To dance the tango is to rediscover yourself. To connect with your inner being, and to embark on a magical journey.

For Netza Roldán, president of the American Tango Institute, it’s more than that: It’s something that once saved him.

So in return, he has spent the last two years organizing the Chicago Tango Fest in an effort to put the city on the map of the tango world.

“Everywhere you go, you have a big community of tango,” Roldán said. “Europe, Asia, Japan. We want to showcase Chicago as a great city that is evolving into tango.”

This is the second year of the fest, which boasts some of the best dancers in the world as well as live tango orchestras from Italy, Mexico City, San Francisco, and Chicago. The four-day event will include dance workshops at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel, free performances at Viva Chicago, and a gala dinner and a “milonga” dance at Navy Pier on Saturday.

“Last year was successful,” Roldán said. “We planted the seed. This year’s theme is ‘A World-Class Event in a World-Class City.’”

Roldán knows all about world-class cities, having traveled the world dancing. Born in Mexico, his grandmother is famous actress Catalina Chávez, who starred in a daily fotonovela with a plot based around a tango. “So even though I am from Mexico, I grew up with tango in my house. It’s always been a passion for me,” he said.

But it wasn’t until he was in his 20s that the tango saved his life.

“To be honest, I was in a clinical depression, and my psychologist told me I should try an activity I had never tried before,” Roldán said. “I have done exercise, and I went to college, and I am very involved in my community.”

By coincidence, the most famous couple in tango, Gloria and Eduardo, were in town to teach a dance workshop. Roldán went to it, and found what he had been looking for. The passion of tango took him out of his depression.

“It changed the relationship that I had with myself first – with my inner being,” he said. “It was about a way to express my feelings and emotions and share it with somebody else, and also the need of having physical contact without the compromise or the pressure of a relationship.”

But, more than anything else, Roldán said, he rediscovered himself through the dance.

Roldán always tells his students there are three components to the Tango.

“First you really have to understand the musicality, and learn to move with the movement. Secondly, the technique of the dance is very simple: Switch the weight in your body and change the direction.”

Of course, he says, those simple moves become complicated as beginners learn that there are endless ways you can change directions with your partner.

The third component is the most important. It is the connection felt between you and your partner.

“You cannot connect with that person if you cannot connect with your inner being,” Roldán said. “That’s why it’s a good experience for people who want to do something that will enhance the inner spirit.”

Roldán said that while you can dance with anyone in the tango, everyone is going to have a favorite partner. His is Eugenia Parrilla, and she will be dancing in this year’s fest. She is one of the top female dancers in the world, “because her artistic ability and her human projection of the feelings in the dance are the most passionate and intense that I have ever seen,” he said.

There is something tangueros call the “magical circle,” when the energies exchanged between two people become one with each other as well as with the music. It is then that tango becomes something much more than a dance.

“The thing is, it all starts when you invite somebody to dance,” he said. “And it becomes magical when you embrace for the first time, because it’s like a first date on the dance floor. And you have three minutes to show each other who you are as a person. Through the dance floor you project your personality.”

So the man proposes his lady to move in a certain direction, and she responds to that proposal. “It’s a conversation among two bodies,” he said. A conversation that screams passion, sex appeal and fever.

“It has become my passion, because it really kind of saved my life,” Roldon said.

El Festival de Tango de Chicago promete bailarines de clase mundial, plenitud de pasión

Bailar tango es redescubrirse a sí mismo; conectarse con su ser interior, y embarcarse en un viaje misterioso.

Para Netza Roldán, Presidente del Instituto Americano del Tango, es más que eso, es algo que una vez lo salvó.

Como retribución, él ha pasado dos años organizando el Festival del Tango en Chicago en un esfuerzo por poner a la ciudad en el Mapa del Tango Mundial.

“Doquiera que uno va, hay una gran comunidad de tango”, dijo Roldán. “Europa, Asia, Japón. Queremos mostrar a Chicago como gran ciudad que se convierte al tango”.

Este es el segundo año del festival, que reúne a algunos de los mejores bailarines del mundo tanto como cuatro orquestas de tango en vivo de Italia, la Ciudad de México, San Francisco y Chicago. El evento de cuatro días incluirá talleres de baile en el Hotel Palmer House Milton, actuaciones gratis en ¡Viva! Chicago y una cena de gala y baile de “milonga” en Navy Pier el sábado.

“El año pasado fue un éxito”, añadió Roldán. “Plantamos la semilla; el tema de este año es ‘Un Evento de Clase Mundial, en una Ciudad de Clase Mundial’”.

Roldán sabe todo de ciudades de clase mundial, habiendo viajado por el mundo bailando. Nacido en México, su abuela es la famosa actriz Catalina Chávez, que estelarizó una telenovela diaria con una trama acerca del tango. “Así que aunque soy de México, crecí con el tango en casa. Ha sido siempre una pasión para mí”, agregó él.

Pero no fue hasta que estaba en sus 20s que el tango salvó su vida.

“Para ser honesto, tenía depresión clínica y mi psicólogo me dijo que debía tratar una actividad que nunca hice antes”, acotó Roldán. “Había hecho ejercicio, y fui al colegio, y estoy muy involucrado en mi comunidad”.

Por coincidencia, la pareja más famosa de tango, Gloria y Eduardo, estaban en la ciudad impartiendo un taller de baile. Roldán asistió y halló lo que andaba buscando. La pasión del tango lo sacó de la depresión.

“Primero cambió mi relación conmigo mismo, con mi ser interior”, destacó él. “Fue una forma de expresar mis sentimientos y emociones y compartirlas con alguien más, y también la necesidad de tener contacto físico sin el compromiso o la presión de una relación”.

Pero más que todo, afirmó Roldán, se redescubrió a sí mismo mediante el baile.

Roldán dice siempre a sus alumnos que hay tres componentes del tango.

“Primero, se debe entender de verdad la musicalizad y aprender a ir con el movimiento. Segundo, la técnica del baile es muy simple; varíe el peso de su cuerpo y cambie dirección”.

Por supuesto, añade él, esos movimientos simples son muy complicados mientras el principiante aprende que hay innumerables formas de cambiar dirección con su pareja.

El tercer componente es el más importante. Es la conexión sentida entre usted y su pareja.

“Pero usted no puede conectarse con esa persona si no se conecta primero con su ser interior”, dijo Roldán. “Tal es por qué es una buena experiencia para gente que quiere hacer algo que mejore su espíritu interno”.

Roldán añadió que aunque se puede bailar tango con cualquiera, todos tendrán una pareja favorita. La suya es Eugenia Padilla, y bailará en el festival de este año. Es una de las mejores bailarinas del mundo. “Ya que su habilidad artística y proyección humana de los sentimientos en el baile son los más apasionados e intensos que jamás he visto”, agregó él.

Hay algo que tangueros llaman el “círculo mágico;” cuando la energía intercambiada entre dos personas se vuelve una sola tanto como la música. Es entonces que el tango se vuelve algo más que un baile.

“La cosa es que todo inicia al invitara alguien a bailar”, acotó él. “Y se vuelve mágico cuando se abraza por vez primera, ya que es una primera cita en la pista de baile. Y se tienen tres minutos para mostrar a la otra persona quién es uno. En la pista de baile uno proyecta su personalidad”.

Así que el hombre propone a su dama moverse en cierta dirección y ella responde a tal propuesta. “Es una conversación entre dos cuerpos”, dijo él. Una conversación que grita de pasión, atracción sexual, fiebre.

“Se ha vuelto mi pasión, ya que como que salvó mi vida”, afirmó Roldán.
